Jamaican Patties And It's History



Jamaican patties are typically made with meat and spices to this mixture is enclosed in a pastry shell. If you are vegetarian, you might take a combination of vegetables and cook them with spices to make your patties. This  has some history behind it which makes it even more fun cooking.

The history of Jamaican patties

The English version of the turnover in the Caribbean was introduced many years ago, during the colonization of the area. Trust officials and African slaves joined the choice of species turnover with cumin, curry, cayenne pepper or Scotch bonnet which is native to the area to get a recipe for Jamaican patties. In addition, curcumin was added to the pastry shell taste and color. The bakery then seals in the flavors of Jamaica and the entire Caribbean area.

Later, when these people migrated to the United States  to  work in the medical professions and the other areas, brought their recipes with them Jamaica patties and burgers soon they began appearing in New York restaurants in the area where the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean were established. These patties slowly became popular in other parts of the U.S. and abroad.

If you are familiar with the spices and flavors that the Jamaican people use, you can actually get your own recipe for Jamaican patties. They use onions, peppers or Scotch Bonnet peppers, garlic, ginger, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, pepper and cinnamon, sometimes. Just cook the onions and peppers for the first time to soften and then add the minced meat of your choice to brown. A little oil can be added if necessary to get the process going brown. Throw in the spices to taste with salt and black pepper, and simmer in a little beef or chicken broth. Use a pastry recipe of your choice or pasta, even pre-made pastry, mix in some turmeric. When baking these patties, which retain the yellow color of turmeric.

Vegetable Patties

Now imagine that instead of cooking the meat into cubes of carrots, potatoes, peas (frozen or fresh), corn (cob cut or frozen), and cabbage with the same spices and flavorings. This mixture can be placed in pastry dough to be baked as well as those of meat. Once you bite into a patty  made in this way, you may not miss the meat at all.

Variations

You can combine recipes with meat and vegetables together for a great patty Jamaican style. The fun part of preparing food in your kitchen is the ability to experiment. Thus, you can add the things you like and change any recipe to suit your likes and dislikes.

Appetizer or main dish

Jamaican patties can be very small for a meal or snack to serve as finger food for a party, or make an ideal dish to make the traditional size of turnovers.
